The Mississippi Midwives Alliance (MMA) was formed in 2009 to represent Mississippi Midwives who work in out-of-hospital settings. We keep a close eye on legislation and provide support, peer review, and  with other midwives in the state of Mississippi.  

Our goal is to keep midwifery safe and accessible for all. We believe homebirth is safest when attended by skilled out of hospital healthcare providers.

Our Purpose:

The MMA seeks to preserve the art and practice of midwifery. Although midwifery is not currently regulated by the state of Mississippi, the MMA serves as a self-regulating body. All of our members are required to meet a minimal standard for both education and experience. The MMA has a set of practice standards that we expect our members to adhere to and we encourage regular peer review and continuing education. The MMA also utilizes a grievance process that provides a method by which a midwifery consumer can bring a formal complaint against a midwife, in the rare event that this is needed.

Statement of Philosophy:

As midwives, we believe that the practice of midwifery is separate and distinct from the practice of medicine. Midwifery is a discipline pertaining to the normal cycle of life. We base our profession on the Midwifery Model of Care and believe that:

•Pregnancy and birth are a fundamentally healthy process

•Each woman is unique and her care should be tailored to meet her individual needs

• attending to the emotional and spiritual components of childbearing are as important as appropriate antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum physical care

•Midwives should be trained by other midwives, be that in a school, through an apprenticeship, or both.

•Midwives should maintain a professional attitude and practice which promotes collegial relationships between physicians, midwives, and students 

•The relationship between midwives and their clients are collaborative in nature.
